What this trade is and what it is for

The craft trade "Repairs of other means of transport and working machines" (Annex 1 to the Trade Licensing Act) entitles the holder to the maintenance, repair, adjustment and servicing of means of transport and working machines that are not road motor vehicles. This includes, for example, agricultural, construction, handling and forestry machinery, railway vehicles, vessels, aircraft or stationary working machines. The aim is to return the machine to an operable and safe condition, whether this involves routine maintenance, the replacement of parts, a general overhaul, or the elimination of a fault.

The trade is suitable for authorised and independent service centres, repairers of agricultural and construction machinery, machine manufacturers' service technicians and craftspeople working in the field at the customer's premises.

What falls under this trade (and what does not)

The trade covers in particular repairs and servicing of machines and means of transport that are not road vehicles. The boundaries with neighbouring trades are important:

  • Road motor vehicles (passenger and goods vehicles, motorcycles, buses) fall under the separate craft trade "Repairs of road vehicles" – not here.
  • Manufacture of machines and their assembly may fall under other craft or unqualified (free) trades (e.g. locksmithing, metalworking).
  • Electrical and gas equipment on machines may require a separate licence and professional qualification under special regulations.
  • Regular technical inspections of railway vehicles, vessels or aircraft are governed by special regulations and may require further authorisation beyond the trade.

This includes, for example:

  • repairs and servicing of agricultural machinery (tractors, combine harvesters, seed drills),
  • repairs of construction and handling machinery (excavators, loaders, forklift trucks),
  • servicing of forestry and municipal machinery,
  • repairs of railway vehicles, vessels and aircraft,
  • repairs of stationary working machines and their mechanical parts.

Conditions for obtaining it under the law

To notify a craft trade you must meet the general conditions under Section 6 of the Trade Licensing Act: be of full legal capacity and have a clean criminal record (a clean criminal record is required under Section 6 and is documented by the Trade Licensing Office with an extract from the Criminal Records Register). The law does not require medical fitness or liability insurance as a general condition for this trade. At the same time, there must be no obstacles to carrying on the trade under Section 8 (e.g. previous insolvency or a ban on the activity).

You must also prove a professional qualification (the special condition under Section 7). Under Section 21 you document it with one of the following: an apprenticeship certificate, a school-leaving certificate, a diploma of graduation from a higher professional school or university in the relevant field, a certificate of recognition of professional qualification, or a certificate of verification or recognition of an attained qualification under Act No. 179/2006 Coll.

If you do not have education directly in the field, you can use the substitute variants under Section 22:

  • education in a related field + 1 year of practice in the field,
  • retraining issued by an accredited institution + 1 year of practice in the field,
  • or 6 years of practice in the field without a certificate of education.

You do not have to hold the professional qualification personally – you may document it through a responsible representative under Section 11, that is, a person who meets the conditions and is in a contractual relationship with you. A single person may act as a responsible representative for no more than 4 entrepreneurs.

How to notify the trade step by step

  1. Prepare your documents – proof of identity and proof of professional qualification (apprenticeship certificate, school-leaving examination, diploma, retraining or proof of practice).
  2. Complete the Unified Registration Form (JRF) – a single form handles the trade as well as registrations with the tax office, the social security administration and the health insurance company.
  3. Submit the notification – in person at any municipal Trade Licensing Office, at a Czech POINT contact point, or electronically via the rzp.gov.cz portal.
  4. Pay the administrative fee – CZK 1,000 on notification, or CZK 800 for electronic submission via rzp.gov.cz.
  5. Await the entry – the Trade Licensing Office will make the entry in the Trade Register within 5 working days of notification. However, the trade licence arises as early as the day of notification (provided the conditions are met).

A detailed procedure can be found in the guide How to set up a trade.
