What this trade is and what it is for
The trade "Design, styling, window-dressing activity and modelling" is field no. 67 within the single unqualified (free) trade (Annex 4 to the Trade Licensing Act, Act No. 455/1991 Coll.). It covers creative and visual work: designing the appearance of products, spaces, clothing, graphics and interiors, their styling and presentation. It serves everyone who professionally creates design, shop windows, decorations or earns a living by presenting (modelling) - from graphic and interior designers, through window dressers, to models.
As with any unqualified (free) trade, no professional qualification is proven here - it is enough to meet the general conditions under Section 6 (see below). The licence arises on the very day of notification.
What falls under this trade (and what does not)
Field 67 covers in particular:
- design and styling activity - designs of industrial products, packaging, furniture, clothing and fashion accessories, jewellery, interiors and exteriors,
- window-dressing activity - dressing shop windows, shops, exhibitions, trade-fair stands and decorations,
- modelling - presentation of clothing, products and accessories by models, participation in fashion shows and photo productions,
- designs of visual appearance and styling, decorating and ornamental work.
Boundaries with neighbouring trades. Design activity overlaps with field no. 62, "Preparation of technical designs, graphic and drawing work"; technical and construction drawings belong rather there, while artistic and aesthetic design belongs here. Photography itself belongs to field no. 68, "Photographic services", not under modelling. Be mindful too of regulated professions: the activity of an authorised architect under Act No. 360/1992 Coll. (project documentation of buildings) goes beyond the scope of the unqualified trade and requires authorisation by the CKA. Tailoring clothing to order is a separate craft trade, whereas its design is unqualified (free).
Conditions for obtaining it under the law
Because this is an unqualified (free) trade, you only need the general conditions under Section 6 of the Trade Licensing Act:
- full legal capacity (usually reaching the age of 18; a court may grant it to a minor),
- clean criminal record - for Czech citizens the office obtains the extract from the Criminal Records Register itself.
Professional qualification is not required and is not proven in any way - you need no apprenticeship certificate, art-school diploma or experience. Education or a portfolio may help with clients, but they play no role for the office.
If you meet the conditions yourself, you do not need a responsible representative. If you nonetheless wished to pursue the trade through another person (e.g. a legal entity or a combination of activities), you may appoint a responsible representative under Section 11 - for an unqualified trade it is likewise enough for them to meet the general conditions under Section 6, with no competence proven. One person may act as responsible representative for no more than 4 entrepreneurs.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need any schooling for modelling or design?
No. This is an unqualified (free) trade; professional qualification is not proven. It is enough to meet the general conditions under Section 6 - full legal capacity and a clean criminal record.
I am a graphic designer - should I take field 67 or 62?
It depends on the content. Artistic and aesthetic design (visual design, styling) belongs to 67; technical and drawing work and the preparation of technical designs belong to 62. Many graphic designers notify both - for a single fee.
Can I design buildings as an interior designer under this trade?
Interior design, yes. Project documentation of buildings within the meaning of Act No. 360/1992 Coll. falls under an authorised architect, however, and you cannot cover it with the unqualified trade.
How much will I pay if I take several fields at once?
Still only a single fee of CZK 1,000 (CZK 800 electronically). The number of fields does not change the notification price.
How soon can I start doing business?
The licence arises on the day of notification - you can invoice straight away. The office makes the entry in the register and issues the extract within 5 working days.
